Six Thousand Users Moved With Zero Downtime Across a 24/7 Supply Chain

Most Active Directory migrations look straightforward until you factor in four internal teams, a corporate separation, and a logistics operation that never stops running. That's what we faced when a global supply chain company needed to migrate 6,500 users out of a parent organization's AD environment and cross-tenant Office 365 setup. The constraint wasn't technical complexity. It was this: there is no maintenance window in a 24/7 logistics business. Warehouse systems depend on AD authentication. Shift workers span multiple time zones. The supply chain cannot tolerate even a brief brownout. Every decision we made had to work around operational continuity, not assume it away. That changed how we approached discovery, staging, and cutover sequencing. Most migration firms treat disaster recovery as a post-migration concern. We staged forest recovery protection before touching a single production object. Discovery work using Quest Enterprise Reporter also caught three group policy conflicts that would have broken authentication after the move. We resolved them in the lab before the first wave went live. That's the difference between a smooth cutover and a 2am incident call. The hardest part wasn't the technical work. Four separate teams (IT, legal, HR, operations) each had their own timelines and definitions of "done." We had to build a shared cutover readiness checklist and get rollback criteria in writing before wave one started. The technical migration using Quest Migrator Pro for Active Directory and Quest On Demand Migration for the O365 cross-tenant move was the straightforward part once we had scope alignment. We walk through the discovery findings, the staged cutover sequence, and how we kept four teams synchronized in the full case study.
